George Vandell Chappell III of Chelsea, a caterer who worked food service at MIT, Bank of America and TD Garden, died October 11. He was 39. Family and friends knew him as Vandell.
He was born in Boston on April 15, 1987, the son of Yvette Michelle Chappell and the late George Vandell Chappell Jr. He finished his high school equivalency diploma in 2006 and went into catering soon afterward. He also spent time on the job at Massachusetts General Hospital.
At home he was the cook. His family says he called himself a top chef and grill master, and he was known for firing up the grill on short notice and having friends and relatives over. He enjoyed fine dining, always smelled good and liked a sharp pair of sunglasses.
His family says fatherhood mattered more to him than anything else. His son, Geo, is 17. He also leaves his mother, Yvette.
Calling hours and a funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Welsh Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea. A celebration of life follows at the Merritt Club, 101 Webster Ave., Chelsea.
