He grew up in Medford, graduated from Medford High School in 1961 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Boston University, where he played first base for the Terriers. He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard from 1965 to 1968.
At Belmonte Junior High School in Saugus, students knew him as “Mr. P.” He taught gym and later information technology and coached football and baseball, and he was also varsity coach of the Saugus High School football, hockey and baseball teams. In Everett he shared a home with his parents and his sister’s family, and his nieces and nephews called him “Uncle Ricky.” He liked boating, coin and stamp collecting, a good game, a good meal and a new car, and a long line of dogs, the latest named Teddy.
He leaves his longtime partner, Judy Masucci of Winthrop; his nieces Joanne Crafts of Everett and Kim Dell Isola of Lynnfield and his nephew Jay Darling of Peabody, with their spouses; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews.
