The Boston Foundation recently granted $75,000 to the Chelsea Jewish Foundation. These funds will support staff and volunteer training, as well as the creation of operational procedures for the Leonard Florence Center for Living, an innovative new facility within the Chelsea Jewish Foundation’s healthcare network that will begin operations in early next year. “I am so pleased that the Chelsea Jewish Foundation received this support from The Boston Foundation,” stated Barry Berman, CEO of the Chelsea Jewish Foundation. “The Leonard Florence Center for Living is going to have a tremendous impact on the lives of the elderly and disabled. I am honored that The Boston Foundation recognizes the innovative nature of this project.” This facility will introduce a fresh approach to skilled nursing, offering residential environments for seniors and individuals living with conditions including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis. The Leonard Florence Center for Living will feature ten condominium-style Green Houses, each spanning 7,000 square feet. Every house will include ten private bedrooms surrounding a shared living room, kitchen, and dining space, accommodating 100 residents in total. Nursing assistants employed at each house will handle meal preparation, laundry services, and personal care. Clinical services will be delivered through visits from a dedicated team of nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and other medical professionals. “The Green House model will allow individuals to receive assistance with daily living and clinical care on an as needed basis as well as free them from the constraints of an institutional schedule, promoting autonomy and choice,” Berman noted.
