The Chelsea High football team took the field at home against Northeast Metro under circumstances that seemed ideal for success. With a 7-1 record, the Red Devils had an opportunity to claim the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Title with a victory over the Knights. However, Chelsea fell short, losing 14-12 in a game that left the team searching for answers. The Red Devils’ only remaining path to a share of the conference crown requires Northeast to suffer an upset loss to North Shore Tech on November 25.
Time of possession became the decisive factor working against Chelsea. Northeast dominated the clock, especially during the second half when the Red Devils managed only three offensive possessions. The Knights struck first with a ten-play drive, capping it off with a 45-yard touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion for an early 8-0 advantage. In the second quarter, Northeast executed another extended drive from deep in their own territory, reaching the Chelsea five-yard line before a forced fumble halted their progress. This drive foreshadowed the offensive struggles Chelsea would face throughout the contest.
Chelsea responded with its most effective drive of the game, moving 80 yards downfield and scoring on a 5-yard Daniel Martinez run with eight seconds remaining in the quarter. The Red Devils failed on the two-point conversion attempt, trailing 8-6 at halftime. Despite defensive adjustments to prevent Northeast from controlling the ball, Chelsea’s defense found itself exhausted from constant activity. The Knights’ offense would hold the ball for extended periods, and when the Red Devils did force stops, they often came only after Northeast had already consumed significant time. Chelsea’s offensive struggles compounded the problem, as quick three-and-outs repeatedly sent the defense back onto the field.
Another lengthy Northeast drive in the third quarter resulted in a touchdown and a failed two-point conversion, giving the Knights a 14-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Desperate circumstances forced Chelsea into action with 1:18 remaining after recovering a fumble near midfield. The comeback attempt began poorly when quarterback Nelson Molina was sacked for a 12-yard loss. With no timeouts left, Molina spiked the ball to preserve time. On third-and-long with 27 seconds on the clock, Molina connected with J.J. Rivera on a 63-yard touchdown pass. Needing the two-point conversion to tie, Chelsea called another passing play, but Northeast’s aggressive rush forced Molina into a hurried throw that fell incomplete. Northeast ran out the remaining seconds to secure the victory.
Molina’s statistics showed four completions on eight attempts for 115 yards, while Martinez accumulated 75 rushing yards on 75 carries. Despite these individual performances, the loss cast a shadow over what had otherwise been a strong season. “It’s a very tough loss,” said head coach Mike Stellato. “We were in the driver’s seat. A win and we win the conference. I can’t lie to you: everyone is disappointed. We had the opportunity, but you have to give credit to Northeast. I thought that they played a good game and they did the things they wanted to do to prevent us from getting our offense going.”
A Thanksgiving upset by North Shore Tech would be surprising, considering that Chelsea dominated that same team 42-14 on November 6. That victory showcased the Red Devils’ potential, with North Shore Tech held to just 21 total offensive yards in the first half while Chelsea accumulated 435 total yards. Martinez led the offensive charge with 225 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The Red Devils, now 7-2, will travel to Charlestown High for a Thanksgiving morning game.
