Law enforcement agencies operating at the state, local and federal levels conducted a coordinated series of raids throughout Chelsea last Friday, resulting in 16 career criminals being taken into custody. The arrests proceeded without incident, with the exception of Rigoberto Ramirez’s apprehension, which involved an FBI Swat Team responding to Federal drug charges. Ramirez was arrested without resistance at 181 Nichols Street. Among those detained, 11 men faced Federal Indictment warrants and were held without bail, each potentially facing up to 30 years in prison as career criminals. Prior arrests among the detainees predominantly involved narcotic and firearm violations. According to Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes, this operation represents an ongoing commitment to removing career criminals from Chelsea’s streets. “The Chelsea Police Department will continue to conduct these operations that target this very dangerous element,” Kyes said. “The Department has prioritized focused enforcement on these repeat offenders and will continue to work with our Federal and State partners in this aggressive pursuit to make Chelsea safer,” he added. The initiative, called Operation Crossroads, focused on dismantling gang activity and criminal enterprises centered in the Bellingham Square area. City Manager Jay Ash welcomed the results, noting that the investigation had successfully removed dangerous offenders from the community. “I’m a big believer in going after the major players,” added Ash. Approximately 100 officers from Federal, Chelsea and State Police agencies executed the raids simultaneously early Friday morning, pursuing 17 targets across the city. Sixteen individuals were apprehended without complications. “We see a lot of repeat offenders and criminals who skirt the criminal justice system. Basically we went to work with the FB and state agencies targeting these people and got them off the streets,” said Chelsea Police Captain Keith Houghton. “We urge Chelsea residents to provide information to us anonymously on our 24 hour Crimestoppers TIP line at 617-466-4880,” he said.
