In Tuesday’s U.S. Senatorial election, Attorney General Martha Coakley demonstrated considerable support in Chelsea. She received 2562 votes in the city, while her opponent Scott Brown garnered 1501 votes. Despite this local victory, Brown prevailed across the state, defeating Coakley by more than 100,000 votes in the special election, which drew slightly more than 2 million total votes cast. Libertarian candidate Joseph L. Kennedy received 73 votes in Chelsea. City Clerk Debbie Clayman noted that “The city showed a good turnout,” “The voting throughout the city went off without a hitch,” In Chelsea, 4159 ballots were cast out of 11,288 registered voters, representing a turnout of 36.84 percent. The election saw 23 blank ballots.
