He made clear his position on a pressing issue: he was withholding approval of nearly 300 health insurance premium renewals because he believed the proposed increases were excessive. This conversation launched into a broader hour-long discussion in which the business owners asked what steps the governor was taking to support small enterprises during the recession. This marked the governor’s fourth trip to Chelsea within five weeks. He had traveled to Chelsea from East Boston, where he had participated in the annual early morning YMCA breakfast, an event that drew roughly 350 attendees. “I have come to listen – not to talk,” the governor remarked as he began his remarks. The governor’s frequent appearances across various cities and towns reflect his broader campaign strategy to demonstrate decisive action and build momentum for his upcoming re-election effort. Those present at the Chelsea Clock gathering found the experience valuable. “He is very smart, very assertive and very charming,” noted Robert Katz, owner of Nu Tread Tire and one of the business owners seated with the governor. “I was impressed,” Katz continued. Like his fellow participants, Katz departed the meeting with a sense of satisfaction about having participated and heard directly from the governor. The governor toured the 100 year-old Chelsea Clock facility on Everett Avenue alongside its owner and CEO J.K. Nicholas and Chelsea city manager Jay Ash. Governor Patrick’s personal collection includes several Chelsea Clocks, which he frequently presents to VIPs visiting the state or to individuals retiring after lengthy careers. Chelsea Clocks are distributed through direct sales and prestigious retailers such as Tiffanys, with customers worldwide. The governor’s Chelsea visit exemplified his campaign entering a more intensive phase, with staff members noting that he maintains a schedule beginning at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through late evening. In direct interaction, the governor demonstrates considerable polish. He exhibits warmth and sophistication, maintains courteous conduct, and appears genuinely attentive to others’ perspectives. Reports suggest his poll numbers are improving—a development that appears well-founded.
