Chelsea lost one of its most celebrated sporting figures last week. Lennie Lopes, who spent decades making his mark on the local athletic scene, served as captain and player for some of the finest softball teams the city has ever seen. He was 88. Among the city’s modern sporting personalities, few were as widely recognized or as well-regarded as Lopes. Known for his quiet demeanor, he was an accomplished athlete in his younger years and seemed to defy the aging process, competing alongside much younger players well into his 60’s. We salute Lennie for all he brought to the community—he was truly a remarkable man. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family.
