One year into operations, Market Basket’s continues to shatter sales records and draw large, varied crowds of shoppers. The sprawling supermarket—possibly the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi River—has emerged as a destination for quality-conscious food shoppers looking for value and selection. “The first year anniversary finds us very pleased. It has been a superb year and we’ve received a super response from the Chelsea store,” William Marsden, the store’s director of operations, said. “We are most pleased. Everything has gone better than our expectations,” he continued. The Demoulas Family intends to undertake significant development at the former Mystic Mall property, which houses the supermarket and is owned by the family. City officials are currently reviewing plans for the aging structure, which reportedly would feature a restaurant and a major retail tenant. According to Mr. Marsden, no celebration is planned. “It will be business as usual,” he explained. “None of our success could have been achieved without our dedicated and knowledgeable employees.”
