Across the expansive senatorial district, balloting proved remarkably tight, with State Senator Sal DiDomenico narrowly defeating Cambridge Attorney Tim Flaherty by a margin of 172 votes. The senator secured 6,288 votes overall compared to Flaherty’s 6,118 among nearly 13,000 total ballots cast across all municipalities in the region. Chelsea residents favored DiDomenico, 721-701. “I am proud and pleased,” Senator DiDomenico said. “The people have spoken. We campaigned hard and it paid off,” he added. Turnout patterns shaped the outcome decisively: Everett mobilized voters at higher-than-anticipated rates while Cambridge’s participation fell short of projections. “We fought the good fight,” Flaherty said. “I’m disappointed. We worked hard. We believed we could win this but it wasn’t in the cards,” he said. This contest marked the second matchup between the two candidates in mere months. DiDomenico had previously won a special election to succeed former Senator Anthony Galluccio by just 120 votes. Believing that a field without three other contenders would give Cambridge the boost needed for victory, Flaherty entered the race again. However, DiDomenico’s superior organization throughout the district proved decisive, as the numbers ultimately demonstrated.
