Earlier this week, Island End Park held its official opening ceremony on a misty morning along the riverfront. The event drew City Manager Jay Ash, other city officials, and several residents from Admiral’s Hill. “I’m excited about adding another new park to the budding portfolio of open space in the city. Another open space along Chelsea’s waterfront for people to experience is the direction we are heading,” said Ash. The newly completed mini-park represents genuine open space—a verdant urban sanctuary bordered by the industrial zone along Beacham Street on one side and a natural habitat where waterfowl and neighborhood residents can connect with nature on the other. Accessible via a substantial wooden boardwalk extending from Admiral’s Hill, Island End Park is part of the city’s broader initiative to develop outdoor recreational areas that complement the Chelsea shoreline’s existing open spaces. The city invested $260,000 in the gazebo, lighting, landscaping, and boardwalk construction. According to Ash, the project came in well under its original budget. The park was originally projected to cost $450,000, but value engineering and competitive construction bids resulted in significant cost reductions. The state covered 70 percent of the expenses, with the city’s operating budget providing the remaining funds.
