The Chelsea High girls soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss to the undefeated Shawsheen Tech squad last Thursday, but bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Lynn Tech on Monday. “We played a fantastic first half against Tech, which really showed how much we’ve improved over the course of the season,” said CHS head coach Jennifer Gulko, “The team was passing and communicating and we had tons of shots. The offense had more shots on net than any previous game which is an indication of their improved skills.” Junior Zuleima Castillo and sophomore Quinnee Valenzona each scored for Chelsea, with junior Loren Ramos providing an assist. Gulko was also encouraged by her team’s performance in the Shawsheen matchup. Through the first half against Shawsheen, the Lady Red Devils kept the game competitive, though they trailed 1-0. “We played tough defense, especially in the first half,” noted Gulko. The coach highlighted the strong performance of freshman Francis Teruel at left forward (moved from his usual midfield position), as well as the defensive contributions of Zuleima Castillo and Elsa Nuñez. Chelsea’s goalkeeper Gabby Salazar delivered a solid effort between the posts. The Lady Red Devils’ regular season was set to conclude yesterday (Wednesday) with a makeup game against Mystic Valley, rescheduled from an earlier rainout.
