Among Massachusetts municipalities, only 30 have achieved State Accreditation status, a distinction that Chelsea’s police department now holds. According to Police Chief Brian Kyes and City Manager Jay Ash, this accomplishment places Chelsea in an elite group. When looking specifically at major city police departments—those serving populations exceeding 40,000 with a minimum of 75 sworn permanent officers—the achievement becomes even more remarkable. Of 32 such departments statewide, merely seven have earned professional accreditation. Chelsea’s police force joins a small roster that includes Peabody, Waltham, Woburn, Fall River, Framingham, and the Transit Authority.
“We are delighted that the hard work of the police department has gained the recognition it deserves,” said City Manager Ash. In addressing his department, Chief Kyes conveyed appreciation for their contributions. “You should ALL be very proud of yourselves for the collective hard work and effort that everybody put forward to bring us to this important stage which enhances the professionalism of our law enforcement agency.
