Chelsea High’s boys soccer team faced off against a formidable Brookline team in Monday afternoon’s opening round of the MIAA Division 1 North Sectional State Tourney at Chelsea Stadium, falling 6-1. Brookline, seeded 13th in the D-1 North sectional after being ranked as high as 12th in Eastern Mass. this season, proved too strong for the Red Devils. “We had scouted Brookline in their game against Westford Academy on Saturday (a 4-0 shutout for Brookline), so we knew they had good size and would be tough to handle,” According to CHS assistant coach Evan Protasowicki, “They’re a very strong team and they got the edge on us right away.” The visitors built an early lead with two goals before adding a third to reach 3-0 by halftime. Following the break, Brookline extended its advantage to 4-0 shortly after the restart, though Carlos Cruz answered back with a goal for Chelsea. Brookline quickly responded to make it 5-1, effectively ending any realistic comeback hopes for the Red Devils. “It was a tough way for our seniors to end their high school careers,” Protasowicki noted that “but we had an outstanding season and have a lot to be proud of. We won the CAC title with an 11-1-2 record and earned a fourth seed in the North Sectional.” The team will gather for one final practice session Thursday, providing an opportunity for the graduating seniors to say goodbye.
