On Election Day, more than 5,000 Chelsea residents cast ballots, delivering a decisive victory to the entire Democratic slate. Governor Deval Patrick, a frequent visitor to the city whose administration has provided substantial support, emerged as a major winner in Chelsea. Patrick garnered 3,198 votes compared to Charlie Baker’s 1,290, while independent Tim Cahill received 331 votes and Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein received 65 votes.
The Democratic dominance extended throughout the ballot. Attorney General Martha Coakley defeated James McKenna decisively, earning 3,569 votes to McKenna’s 1,063. Secretary of State William Galvin received 3,502 votes versus William Campbell’s 852. State Treasurer Steve Grossman, newly elected, captured 3,156 votes compared to Karyn Polito’s 1,336. State Auditor Suzanne Bump, also newly elected, received 2,801 votes to Mary Connaughton’s 1,265. Congressman Mike Capuano ran unopposed and received 3,757 votes.
In other races, Governor’s Councilor candidate Terrence Kennedy prevailed over Paul Caruccio with 2,620 votes to 1,191. Senator Sal DiDomenico overwhelmingly defeated Republican opponent Barbara Bush, 3,299 to 1,051. Sheriff of Suffolk County Andrea Cabral received 3,315 votes compared with 754 for Hassan Smith. Unopposed candidates also fared well, with Rep. Gene O’Flaherty receiving 2,606 votes and Rep. Kathi-Anne Reinstein receiving 1,143 votes. District Attorney Dan Conley received 3,365 votes. In Regional Vocational School Committee balloting, Jeanne Feeley received 1,843 votes to Marie Ferrari’s 1,174.
Chelsea voters rejected all three ballot questions. On Question 1 regarding the alcohol tax, voters chose No 2,615 times versus 1,822 Yes votes. Question 2, concerning moderate and low income housing regulations, saw 3,147 No votes and 1,431 Yes votes. Question 3, on lowering the state sales tax, resulted in 3,075 No votes to 1,611 Yes votes.
