Tuesday saw robust voter participation throughout the city, with more than 42% of registered voters casting ballots. The election’s outcome, which had appeared uncertain, ultimately proved unsurprising given Chelsea and Massachusetts’s established Democratic leanings. In fact, the results suggest this tendency has only strengthened. Every candidate on the Democratic ticket prevailed—a remarkable achievement considering the substantial Republican wave that reshaped Congress nationwide. What message do these results send about Massachusetts voters? We interpret it as reflecting a fundamental confidence in our community and our values. Additionally, we believe it demonstrates that voters ultimately prioritize human welfare over detached fiscal approaches that treat people as mere statistics. Charlie Baker, the Republican candidate, is a smart guy and a good Dad and husband. Yet his message centered on fiscal reformation failed to gain the traction that Governor Deval Patrick’s message achieved—his conviction that human beings are frail and need all the help they can get to go through the tough times. We believe that resonated and this is why the Republicans went down. The path forward remains unclear. One thing is certain, though: Massachusetts appears to operate according to its own principles—distinctly removed from the Tea Party movement, from those advocating job cuts, and from those who disparage the poor or those dependent on welfare. There is something commendable about resisting such negative forces. Once more, Massachusetts has demonstrated that it marches to the beat of a different drummer.
