One of Chelsea’s most significant open space projects in recent years will commence in March. Preliminary renderings depict the upcoming soccer field that will transform Highland Park, a facility that has long suffered from neglect and underutilization. The comprehensive renovation will feature a new artificial turf surface designed for soccer, engineered for 24/7 accessibility so that young people in the city can use it throughout the day and night. “It will be like creating ten new fields,” said City Manager Jay Ash. As part of its waterfront masterplan agreement with the city, Eastern Minerals will be contributing the artificial turf at no cost. “We are eager to get going with this project,” said Joe McNamee of Eastern Minerals. The arrangement also includes removal of abandoned asphalt storage tanks currently positioned along the Chelsea River on Marginal Street. Initial designs for both the Highland Street park and the adjacent waterfront public space suggest enhancements that are expected to satisfy local residents and those who negotiated the Eastern Minerals agreement. Before moving forward with implementation, the city will host a community meeting at a date to be determined, where residents can offer input on the proposed designs.
Highland Park Reconstruction and New Field Set for March
