Chelsea High’s boys basketball team showed it belongs among the elite, toppling former Greater Boston League opponent Peabody 76-69 on Monday night. The margin in the final score did not reflect the Red Devils’ commanding performance, as they avenged an earlier season loss to Peabody. From the opening tip, Chelsea established dominance with a 15-0 run and maintained control throughout. By halftime, the Red Devils had built a 38-22 lead, which ballooned to nearly 20 points by the end of the third quarter. With three minutes remaining, Chelsea held a 16 point advantage before Peabody connected on several late three-pointers that merely improved the final tally. “I think we let up a bit at the end because we knew we had the game well in hand,” said CHS head coach Jay Seigal. “But overall we did a tremendous job at both ends of the floor.” Sammy Mojica delivered an outstanding effort with 26 points, four blocked shots and multiple assists. Joseph Rivera contributed 18 points and dominated the boards, while Troy Crosley added 14 points. This victory marked Chelsea High’s second win in seven days and kept the red devils undefeated in Commonwealth Athletic Conference play following a 62-38 victory over Northeast Regional Vocational School. Another explosive opening—21-0 after one quarter—proved decisive in that contest. Felix Crespo led the red devils with 17 points. Now 9-3 overall and 8-0 in the CAC, Chelsea High faces former GBL rival Revere tonight (Thursday) and travels to Greater Lowell on Tuesday.
The Chelsea High girls basketball team, posting a strong 6-1 record in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference (6-2 overall), faces a demanding week ahead. Coach Matt LaBranche’s Lady Red Devils competed against Essex Aggie yesterday (Wednesday); will host Pope John today; will host Fellowship of Christian Academy tomorrow; and will travel to Lynn Tech on Tuesday.
