Wednesday’s combination of snow followed by sleet created massive accumulations of slush and frozen water that have wreaked havoc on Chelsea’s infrastructure. The sequence of plowing, application of salt and sand, and heavy water saturation has taken a severe toll on the pavement. Add to this the constant pounding of heavy traffic, and the result is a proliferation of large potholes across the city’s streets. Broadway, Washington Avenue, and numerous other major thoroughfares are seeing these holes expand rapidly into serious hazards. While it may be an overstatement to say they can completely destroy a vehicle, the potholes currently dotting Chelsea streets are certainly capable of damaging a car’s front end or puncturing a tire when struck. The city must undertake an aggressive effort to repair these troublesome holes, which present genuine safety concerns. Motorists should not face vehicle damage simply because they are traveling on a Chelsea street.
