On Sunday evening, Officer Paul McCarthy of the Chelsea Police Department was instrumental in saving two toddlers who became trapped and were being pulled along by an amusement ride at a carnival. While working a paid detail at the carnival grounds, Officer McCarthy heard intense yelling and screaming coming from a ride known as the “Hampton Combo,” a carousel-type attraction. Upon investigation, he discovered one young child caught and being dragged into the rear wheelwell of the moving ride, while a second young child was struggling to free the first child from the carousel. The second child soon became trapped as well. The ride operator quickly brought the ride to a halt, and Officer McCarthy lifted the several hundred pound section of the ride to a sufficient height, allowing the operator to extract both children to safety. Following the rescue, both victims, ages two and six, were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. The children sustained non-life threatening injuries affecting their ribs, legs and arms. The identities of the children are being withheld. The incident is under investigation by State Inspectors who were called to the scene. Chelsea residents who wish to assist the Police Department with information may do so anonymously by dialing the 24 hr Crime Stoppers TIP line at 617-466-4880, texting the word Chelsea followed by their message to tip411 (847411) from a cell phone, or submitting anonymous tips through the Police Department’s website at www.chelseapolice.com.
