After dropping a pair of games earlier in the week, the Chelsea High baseball team bounced back Tuesday evening with an 11-4 victory over Maimonides Academy under the lights at Chelsea Stadium.
The Red Devils’ standout performer was Jason Pineda, who delivered on both sides of the ball. He threw a complete game, allowing six hits and just two earned runs, while also launching a three-run homer in the sixth inning that sealed the victory.
“Jason did it all for us,” remarked CHS head coach Alan Beausoleil.
The Chelsea lineup proved relentless against Maimonides, with Frank Rodriguez batting second and creating constant problems. Rodriguez reached base five times through three walks, a hit by pitch, and a single, while scoring four runs. Pedro Hernandez matched Rodriguez’s five times on base with identical means of reaching—three walks, one hit batsman, and one single—scoring two runs and driving in one. Carlos Ramos contributed two hits, a run, and an RBI.
The Red Devils scored in every inning, beginning with two in the first and finishing with four in the sixth, highlighted by Pineda’s home run.
Chelsea had suffered setbacks the previous week against undefeated Mystic Valley, falling 11-6, and North Shore Tech, losing 1-0.
The Mystic Valley contest saw Chelsea leading 5-2 entering the sixth inning before MV erupted for nine runs. Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Vega added two hits.
Daniel Velastegui took the loss in Saturday morning’s 1-0 defeat to North Shore, pitching admirably with just three hits allowed. The unearned run came in the fifth inning following a walk, an infield hit, and an error with two outs.
“Daniel pitched a superb game for us,” Beausoleil noted. “He truly deserved a better fate.”
Chelsea was scheduled to host East Boston yesterday morning (Wednesday) and will face Notre Dame of Lawrence tonight at the Stadium at 6:30. The Red Devils, standing at 2-3 on the season, will travel to Lynn Tech on Tuesday.
Girls track team cruises past Northeast
Improving to 2-0 on the season, the Chelsea High girls track team dominated Northeast Regional Vocational High School last Thursday with a 113-20 victory.
The Lady Red Devils’ dominance was evident as they won 14 of 16 events.
Quinee Valenzola and Stephanie Moni led the way, each capturing first place in two events. Quinee won the 100 meter high hurdles and triple jump while Stephanie took the 100 meter dash and long jump.
Additional first-place finishes for Chelsea came from: Gabriela Ramirez in the 400 low hurdles; Arandeni Ramos in the mile; Katherine Cabral in the 400 meter dash; Sofia Falcon in the 800 meter run; Cristal Rodriguez in the javelin; Bahiya Nasuuna in the shotput; and Lejla Skokic in the discus.
Chelsea’s relay teams also swept their events. The quartet of Quinnee Valenzona, Steicy Martins, Sarah Bourouis, and Stephanie Moni won the 4 x 100 relay, while Katherine Cabral, Yessenia Motta, Arandeni Ramos, and Sara Beqo captured the 4 x 400.
“The team continues to improve,” said CHS head coach Kim Huffer, “with 17 girls achieving personal bests at this meet. We have strong senior leadership, but we are a relatively young team as a whole this year. The girls are continuing to work hard and improve and fill those gaps that we have. It’s exciting to see their happiness when they get a new personal best.”
The Lady Red Devils return to competition Monday when they travel to Greater Lawrence.
CHS boys track team sweeps past Northeast
The Chelsea High boys track team dominated Northeast Regional last week, winning 109-22 for their second consecutive victory of the season.
Ricardo Maldonado was Chelsea’s top performer, winning four individual events for 20 points. Brendan Horn contributed 16 points with three victories and a third-place finish, while Jeffrey Estrada earned 13 points by winning both hurdles events and placing third in the triple jump.
Event results for the Red Devils were as follows:
Jeffrey Estrada captured the 400 meter low hurdles in 70 seconds flat, with teammate Kevin Mendez finishing in 1:18; Tony Nguyen won the two mile in 11:42 and Brian Horn placed third in 12:29; Estrada took the 110 meter hurdles in 19.6, followed by Brendan Lara in third; Ricardo Maldonado won the 100 meter dash in 11.55, with fellow Red Devil Adriel Rodrigues second in 12.18 and Marconi third in 12.6.
Chester Rath won the mile in 5:13, followed by Huthifa Kareem in third at 5:33; Chelsea won the 4 x 100 relay in 51.6; Brendon Horn captured the 400 meter dash in 59.6, followed by Sam Fernandez in second and David Sklodoski in third; Faisal Nasimi won the 800 in 2:24, with Joseph Arroyo second in 2:25 and Oscar Lainez third in 2:31.
Ricardo Maldonado won the 200 meter dash in 24.4 with Adriel Rodriguez third in 26.8; Maldonado also took the javelin with a throw of 143-3, followed by Rodriguez at 118-0 and Alex Guerra at 111-8; Tuan Tran placed second in the shotput with 33-6 and Brian Jimenez was third with 31-3; Richard Andino won the discus with a throw of 80-3 and Tran was third at 78-4.
Brendan Horn long-jumped 16-11 for first place and Michael Rendon was third at 16-5; Horn also won the triple jump with Jeffrey Estrada in second and Kevin Mendez in third; Ricardo Maldonado cleared 5-4 to win the high jump and Faisal Nasimi placed third at 4-10; the 4 x 400 relay team completed the scoring with a 4:10 time.
The Red Devils’ next meet is Monday against Greater Lawrence.
