For many grade school students in New England, Memorial Day signals the approaching end of the school year, with only weeks left before summer break from books, teachers and homework. The holiday also unofficially marks the start of summer, bringing warmer temperatures and longer days.
At its core, Memorial Day honors the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. Following the Civil War’s conclusion, the first Memorial Day service was established to pay respects to those who died from both the North and South.
In recent times, the observance has expanded to include remembrance of departed family members and friends.
Perhaps this is a lesson parents and mentors should pass along to younger generations.
The world moves quickly these days, and a day off is often treated simply as a three-day weekend without consideration of its true purpose.
As families prepare their weekend homes for the season, head to the golf course, or gather for Monday barbecues, we hope some time will be devoted to sharing with—or reminding—our children about family members and friends lost too soon and the dreams they left unfulfilled. Their aspirations for a better world and community now rest with us and our children to carry forward.
