Chelsea’s municipal election cycle is now underway, with several competitive races already emerging as potentially close contests.
Starting May 1st, prospective candidates were able to obtain nomination papers. They must gather signatures and submit their paperwork by Aug. 6th to appear on the ballot.
The race for the three at-large City Council positions appears particularly competitive at this stage.
Former City Councillor Deborah Washington is re-entering the political arena, adding intrigue to the contest. A former District 7 representative from a prominent Chelsea family, Washington will compete against three sitting at-large councillors: Brian Hatleberg, Calvin Brown and Leo Robinson.
With only three seats available and four credible candidates in the running, the outcome remains uncertain.
District 5 is shaping up as another potentially contested race, with incumbent Joe Perlatonda facing possible challenges from two opponents.
One challenger is Henry Wilson, who has previously announced his candidacy and mounted unsuccessful campaigns before. He now suggests he is prepared to mount a successful bid this time.
John Cadiz, a real estate agent at Cobblestone Realty and a newcomer to electoral politics, represents the other potential challenger.
Over the past two years, Perlatonda has established himself as an anti-establishment figure, frequently aligning with controversial Councillor Giovanni Recupero on votes that depart from conventional Chelsea politics.
The outcome of this race will be worth monitoring.
The remaining district seats face no challengers so far: District 1 Councillor Paul Murphy, District 2 Councillor Chris Cataldo, District 3 Councillor Matt Frank, District 6 Councillor Giovanni Recupero, District 7 Councillor Clifford Cunningham and District 8 Councillor Dan Cortell all appear unopposed.
District 4 Councillor Paula Barton has not yet filed her papers.
School Committee races show some potential competition, though the usual shortage of interested candidates continues – a situation that may reignite discussion about establishing an appointed Committee instead.
For the at-large School Committee seat, Shawn O’Regan of Garfield Avenue appears positioned to challenge incumbent Angel Meza of Clyde Street.
The District 2 School Committee seat may feature incumbent Jeanette Velez facing off against Patrick McCarthy of Summit Avenue.
District 1 Member Rosemarie Carlisle, District 4 Member Lucia Colon, District 5 Member Lisa Lineweaver, and District 7 Member Charles Klauder have all filed papers so far.
District 8 Member and chairman Ed Ells has not filed papers, nor have District 6 Member Ana Hernandez or District 3 Member Carlos Rodriguez.
