While we do not claim expertise in foreign policy matters, we believe President Obama made the correct choice in requesting Congressional approval before conducting military strikes against Syria in response to its alleged chemical weapons violations under international law.
We hold the view that deploying America’s military force—except when absolutely necessary for self-defense—should never occur without Congressional consent. Even if Syria has indeed violated international law and warrants punishment, any military action of this magnitude constitutes an act of war and demands a Congressional vote.
With numerous members of Congress holding varied perspectives on the matter, it is appropriate that the President require them to take a definitive stance. The ultimate authority for such a consequential decision should rest with Congress.
