Lydia Leonard
A Webster Avenue native, Lydia Leonard spent her younger years at Merritt Park with friends and maintained a residence on Eleanor Street for 27 years.
During her 13 years as a business partner at City Square Realty, Leonard played an active role in Chelsea’s real estate transformation, particularly in the waterfront district near her former Chelsea Square offices. Through her work, she became an advocate for the city and its opportunities for residents.
Currently in her third year as a real estate agent with Century 21 Mario in East Boston, Leonard continues to champion her native Chelsea and assist potential buyers and developers seeking to participate in the city’s expansion under City Manager Jay Ash.
A recent transaction handled by Leonard involved the property at 81 Broadway, which previously housed a bowling alley, the Chelsea V.F.W., the Beacon Café, and Bohill’s Irish Pub. The building, containing 11 apartments, was purchased by developer Jason Roback for $1.175 million, marking one of Leonard’s most significant local sales.
“Jason loved the building – he loved the character, the area, the views, the parking,” said Leonard. “This building has a lot of potential and Jason really has a lot of insight. He does a fantastic job. He’s transformed other buildings in Chelsea in a very positive way.”
The sale of this historic property held special meaning for Leonard. She highlighted that the building served as a filming location for five movies, with the most recent being the Denzel Washington film the Equalizer.
“I was proud to sell this property and that Marvin [Rudenstin] gave me the opportunity to sell it,” said Leonard.
According to Leonard, Chelsea’s waterfront area “is already booming” and she anticipates continued expansion and neighborhood vitality throughout the city. She believes developments such as the Wyndham Hotel, Residence Inn Marriott, Market Basket, the upcoming FBI headquarters, and other projects have positioned Chelsea as an attractive destination for living, employment, and recreation.
Leonard, 47, is a Pope John XXIII High School graduate balancing her real estate career with parenthood. Her 12-year-old son is named Andreas. Though she currently resides in Revere, Chelsea remains her true home.
“I miss Chelsea – I’m a true Chelsean,” said Leonard, whose sisters are Lisa, Lyn, and Lauri. “My mom (Annemarie) still lives on Webster Avenue.”
