Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins of Suffolk County recently participated in El Mundo Newspaper’s Annual Hispanic Heritage Breakfast, which took place at the Revere Hotel in Boston.
The gathering, which blends elements of an awards ceremony with a comedic roast, occurs annually to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
At the head table with Sheriff Tompkins, and delivering jokes from the dais, were: Alberto Vasallo, III of El Mundo Newspaper, who served as host and Master of Ceremonies; State Treasurer and gubernatorial candidate Steve Grossman; State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry; State Representatives Martin Walsh, who is also running for mayor of Boston, and Jeffrey Sanchez; Boston City Councilors John Connolly, who is also a mayoral candidate, Ayanna Pressley, Felix Arroyo, Jr., Matt O’Malley, and Tito Jackson; MBTA General Manager Dr. Beverly Scott; Yvonne Garcia, National President of the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting; and former U.S. Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez.
“I’m proud to be standing with my Latino brothers and sisters and my friends at El Mundo,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “This is a great opportunity to share some lighthearted fun with my colleagues and also honor some truly special people.”
El Mundo recognized several individuals at the event, including Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Carlos Arredondo, a hero from the Boston Marathon bombing, who was named the Special Honoree. Also honored was Louis Tiant, a baseball legend from the Boston Red Sox, among other guests at this year’s celebration.
