Throughout its history, Chelsea has produced many outstanding basketball players. The city’s hardwood legacy includes Saul Nechtem, Paul “Choc” Glazer, Arnold Goodman, Lew Perkins, Craig Walker and Jeff Hagan, all of whom showcased their talents at the old Chelsea High gymnasium and State Armory on Spencer Avenue.
Sammy Mojica belongs among these Chelsea basketball legends. Currently a senior at Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, Sammy has maintained his excellence on the court. His path to a college basketball scholarship began in Chelsea’s youth sports programs and continued through his time with the Chelsea High School basketball program.
On last Tuesday, CHS Athletic Director Frank DePatto orchestrated an elegant ceremony where Sammy Mojica realized his goal of earning a Division 1 college basketball scholarship to Drexel University.
While the scholarship itself places Sammy among the nation’s elite high school seniors, the remarks from Mr. DePatto, CHS Principal Joseph Mullaney, CHS coach Jay Seigal, and Brimmer and May coach Tom Nelson highlighted what truly made this accomplishment special—their praise for Sammy Mojica as both a student and a person of character.
Sammy’s parents, Sammy Mojica Sr. and Awilda Morales, along with his grandparents, attended this milestone event in CHS basketball history. The pride they must feel knowing their son will pursue both athletics and a world-class education at Drexel University is evident.
Sammy Mojica merits recognition from our community for exemplifying the qualities that inspire other middle and high school student-athletes to pursue college sports.
