Chelsea High’s basketball team mounted a dominant fourth-quarter performance Tuesday evening at the CHS gym, outscoring Mystic Valley 17-3 to secure a 50-39 victory.
Through three quarters, the Red Devils struggled offensively and found themselves trailing at each interval: 16-9, 26-25, and 36-33. The contest proved frustrating for Chelsea as the team failed to establish offensive rhythm.
What sparked the dramatic turnaround in the final eight minutes? The answer was defense—a complete 180 from the team’s earlier performance.
Aggressive defensive pressure that generates turnovers often creates scoring opportunities, and this principle played out perfectly for Chelsea. “fblikebutton_button” explained the shift: “Our press worked well in the fourth quarter. We had been playing inconsistently to that point. But when we applied the press successfully, we kept them bottled up in their end that led to some steals that enabled us to put together a run that changed the complexion of the game.”
Eric Flores paced the Red Devils with 17 points overall, including 11 in the decisive fourth quarter along with a three-pointer. Oscar Sabillon contributed 14 points for the night, adding four more during the final stretch. Additional scorers included Eric Fernandez with six points, Nelson Vega and Victor Corrales with four each, and Jorge Ramos and Albie Alicea with two apiece.
Last Friday, Coach Seigal’s team traveled to Greater Lowell for a first-place showdown in the Large Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference. Both teams entered undefeated at 3-0 in division play, and the lead changed hands repeatedly throughout a closely contested game.
Chelsea led 14-11 after the opening frame, but Gr. Lowell held 30-22 at halftime and 45-39 after three quarters. The Red Devils briefly reclaimed the lead in the final period, yet Gr. Lowell answered with runs of their own.
Free throw shooting decided the outcome. Greater Lowell made 9-of-15 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter compared to just three for Chelsea, allowing GL to secure a 64-58 victory as the Red Devils were forced to foul down the stretch.
Sabillon led Chelsea with 19 points but exited with four minutes remaining after receiving his fifth foul. Flores reached double figures with 17 points, as did Corrales with 12. Alicea scored six, Ramos three, and Vega two.
Standing at 5-5 midway through the season, Chelsea faces a challenging four-game road stretch beginning Friday at Greater Lawrence. The Red Devils continue at Lynn Tech on Monday, Revere on Wednesday, and North Shore Tech the following Friday.
