Throughout its history, Chelsea has benefited from talented Representatives serving in the General Court of Massachusetts. Richie Voke held the seat representing Chelsea voters for more than 20 years until 1996, and he proved particularly skilled at securing grants for the city.
When Richie chose not to run for re-election in 1996, Gene O’Flaherty emerged as his successor—a newcomer to elected office with relatively little experience. With support from his family, particularly his father John, Gene prevailed in both the primary and general election.
Gene quickly mastered the House rules and soon began making his mark at the State House. His ascent through the ranks was swift, culminating in his appointment as Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, a post he has maintained for more than a decade.
Gene became a familiar presence throughout Chelsea, regularly attending public events where he connected with residents and gathered information about their needs, which he then carried back to the State House.
The esteem Gene earned from his colleagues became evident when newly elected Boston Mayor Martin Walsh—a State Representative from Dorchester—asked Gene to serve as the Corporation Counsel for the City of Boston.
Chelsea stands to lose considerable influence as Gene departs. Over more than 18 years, he has brought numerous state grants back to Chelsea that have helped revitalize the city.
