Monday morning arrived without any indication of the severe weather that would soon strike the city of Revere.
Over the course of roughly four minutes of terror, a tornado descended upon Broadway and surrounding streets with devastating force, inflicting substantial damage to residences, commercial establishments, and structures throughout the area.
The National Weather Service confirmed within hours that a tornado was indeed responsible for the extensive destruction visited upon Revere.
The absence of deaths or critical injuries stands as a remarkable blessing for which the community remains deeply grateful.
The response from neighboring municipalities and their emergency responders demonstrated remarkable generosity and compassion in the tornado’s wake.
Throughout the day, Mayor Dan Rizzo exhibited exemplary leadership and maintained firm command of the city’s recovery operations from the beginning. His skillful management of municipal departments, coordinating a cohesive and efficient response to this crisis, merits significant recognition.
According to the Mayor, Governor Deval Patrick’s office responded swiftly, immediately contacting the city and committing state resources to support Revere’s recovery. State leadership including our governor, state representatives Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo and Rep. Roselee Vincent, state senator Anthony Petruccelli, congresswoman Katherine Clark, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey, and city councilors all provided direct assistance, coordinated support, and personal involvement throughout the emergency.
Revere’s firefighters and police officers arrived within minutes of the tornado’s impact, working urgently to restore order and help residents—most of whom had never experienced such a phenomenon.
The Department of Public Works earned considerable praise for its continuous efforts to clear debris and return neighborhoods to normal conditions, removing tangled wires, fallen trees, branches, and scattered debris.
The 2014 Tornado has become part of Revere’s historical record—an extraordinary meteorological event that the community hopes never to repeat. The city takes pride in the dedication of all those who stepped forward to assist residents during this difficult period.
