Miss Chelsea of 1952
Jeanne L. (Larcome) Herman, the devoted wife of Edward Herman, passed away on July 18 at Lafayette Nursing Home in Marblehead. She was 79 years old.
A Chelsea native born on August 10, 1934, Jeanne was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lucille Larcome. She graduated from Chelsea High School and earned recognition for her striking beauty alongside her generous and kind disposition.
She received the title of Miss Chelsea in 1952. The following year, in 1953, Jeanne met Edward Herman, who would become her lifelong partner. They married, spent time traveling to London, and went on to raise five children together. As a mother, wife, and homemaker, Jeanne devoted herself fully to her family. Her talents shone through in cooking, baking, and hosting festive dinner parties, particularly around the holidays.
For many years, Jeanne worked in and contributed to the family business. She also had a period of employment with the Polaroid Company. Known for her spirited and creative nature, she maintained a deep appreciation for beauty, the arts, writing, and politics. Her heart was especially tender toward animals and children.
Jeanne was a committed advocate for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the MSPCA, and the Humane Society. Throughout her years, she opened her heart generously to those near and far, offering selfless assistance whenever others sought her support. Those whose lives she touched will remember her with joy, though she will be deeply missed.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her brother, Robert Larcome. She leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Edward Herman; five children: Barbara Herman of West Hartford, CT, Edward Herman, Jr. of Gloucester, Thomas Herman of Portsmouth, NH, Robert Herman and his wife, Stacey of Pembroke, her devoted son John Herman and his wife, Penelope of Marblehead, and devoted caregiver and daughter-in-law Michelle D’Avolio of Tewksbury. Nine grandchildren called her “Nana Jeanne,” with Leila Fuleihan of New York being the eldest and most devoted. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter. A private Memorial Service will be held, with arrangements made by the Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead.
