Congratulations and Good Luck To City Manager Jay Ash

Chelsea, Massachusetts

Jay Ash, our city manager, has been appointed secretary of housing and economic development in Governor-elect Charlie Baker’s Cabinet, and we extend our congratulations to him on this achievement.

We are confident that Jay will serve with distinction in the Governor Baker Administration. His contributions to economic development and housing initiatives throughout Chelsea have been exceptional. The new developments visible throughout the city demonstrate the significant influence Jay has wielded in fostering our community’s growth, prosperity, and optimistic outlook for what lies ahead.

As one of his mentors reflected this week, Jay’s departure leaves us with conflicting feelings.

Jay Ash will join the ranks of the most significant figures in our city’s history. Standing 6-foot-7-inches tall, he attended Shurtleff School and Chelsea High School, where he excelled in basketball before attending Clark University. He will always occupy a cherished place in the memories of our residents. For Jay to return to the city of his youth and serve as its leader has surely been a profound honor.

Throughout his tenure, Jay maintained a commitment of 100 percent effort every single day. He never became complacent with prior successes, instead continuously pursuing ways to improve Chelsea. His efforts bore fruit.

Our city is losing the visionary leader who guided us toward achievements many deemed impossible. The National Civic League recognized this accomplishment in June when it bestowed upon Jay Ash and the City of Chelsea its prestigious All-America City Award.

As our city manager, Jay Ash has served all Chelsea residents with dedication, and we are certain the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will benefit greatly from his exceptional leadership and abilities in this significant statewide role.

We thank you, Jay Ash, for your accomplishments as our city manager and for reimagining our city into a model that other communities across the nation can emulate.

In sports terms, Jay Ash represents Chelsea’s MVP for this century.

Best wishes to you.
