On Tuesday morning, Gov. Deval Patrick visited the Chelsea Collaborative to sign an executive order focused on environmental justice. The event was organized by the Collaborative’s Gladys Vega and Rosann Bongiovanni, alongside environmental activists from throughout the state. While a future administration could rescind the executive order, there are currently no indications that this will occur. The order represents the culmination of several years of work. According to the Executive Order, the following measures must be implemented: establishment of a Governor’s Advisory Council to provide guidance to the Governor and Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary regarding Environmental Justice Issues; revision of the 2002 Environmental Justice Policy within 60 days; appointment of a Secretariat Environmental Justice Coordinator within 30 days for each cabinet-level position; and posting of Environmental Justice strategies online within 180 days for each cabinet-level position.
