Thanksgiving arrives once more, bringing with it schoolboy football, family get-togethers, and little else to occupy our time except savoring a wonderful meal that makes us appreciate our good fortune.
This holiday stands as distinctly American in character, with origins stretching back nearly 400 years to the Pilgrims, in an era long before the United States of America even existed.
The day carries no burden of expectations—save perhaps for the cook preparing the meal. Unlike other national holidays, Thanksgiving avoids the commercial pressures, religious weight, solemnity, and political dimensions that mark our other celebrations. It remains the sole day when our only real obligation is to be present with those closest to our hearts.
