A 10-year-old fifth grader at Browne Middle School (BMS) named Toni-Chanelle Suncar made the trip to Washington, D.C. on Monday as one of only a select few children across the nation chosen for the White House Science Fair. Her journey began Monday morning departing from Boston, where she participated in a roundtable about women in the sciences, displayed her science fair project, met President Obama, and returned to Chelsea that same Monday evening. Suncar earned her invitation by developing computer code for a game titled “Slap the Unicorn.” Working through BMS’s partnership with Citizens Schools and Digitas Corp., she created the game. Upon completion, the two organizations submitted her work for White House consideration, resulting in her selection.
According to BMS Principal David Leibowitz, this represented Suncar’s first visit to Washington, D.C., as well as her first airplane ride since early childhood. “fblikebutton_button” He noted that although Suncar felt anxious about meeting President Obama, she managed to deliver several sentences she had rehearsed beforehand.
