This week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that Kayem Foods, located in Chelsea, is conducting a recall of roughly 59,203 pounds of fully cooked chicken sausage products due to potential plastic contamination.
Manufactured during various dates throughout March 2015, the recalled items include two product lines:
- Trader Joe’s brand “Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage” in 12-oz. packages carrying case code 9605 and use by/freeze by dates of “4 22 15,” “4 25 15,” and “4 29 15.”
- 8-oz. packages of al fresco brand “Apple Maple Fully Cooked Breakfast Chicken Sausage” with case code 9709 and use by/freeze by dates of “JUN 13 2015” and “JUN 20 2015.”
Bearing the establishment number “P7839” within the USDA mark of inspection, the products subject to recall bear this identifier and reached retail locations across the nation.
Small pieces of plastic were discovered in the product after two consumers filed complaints with the manufacturer about their findings.
To date, neither Kayem Foods nor FSIS has documented any illnesses or injuries resulting from these products. Anyone experiencing potential injury or illness should seek medical attention. Through its standard recall effectiveness checks, FSIS verifies that recalling firms have notified customers and taken appropriate measures to ensure the product is removed from consumer access.
