The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office deserves recognition for hosting the 7th Annual Basketball For Peace Tournament at the UMass Boston Clark Athletic Center, an event we were honored to support.
DA Daniel F. Conley and his team successfully executed the tournament’s core mission: creating a safe, healthy, team-oriented atmosphere where Boston’s youth could gather while providing parents and community leaders with a chance to connect with prosecutors, victim advocates, community outreach professionals, and other members of the DA’s office.
Young participants immediately sensed the quality of the event upon arriving at the UMass gymnasium. Competitive basketball games were played with strong sportsmanship and overseen by professional referees. Players and coaches representing teams from across Suffolk County demonstrated genuine camaraderie throughout the day.
The tournament reached another level when DA Conley’s office secured Leon Powe, the former Boston Celtics player, as a featured speaker. The young attendees heard an inspiring account of Powe’s transformation from a student who underestimated academics to a focused learner who became one of the nation’s elite high school basketball players, eventually attending the University of California-Berkeley. His collegiate achievements at Cal paved the way for his NBA career.
Charlie Titus, UMass Vice Chancellor and a distinguished figure in college athletics, received a lifetime achievement award that visibly moved the legendary coach and administrator. DA Conley’s recognition of Titus and other honorees as role models was clearly appreciated by all recipients.
As leader of the Commonwealth’s busiest district attorney’s office, DA Conley reflects well on both Stonehill College and Suffolk University Law School.
