Boston will not be hosting the Summer Olympics in 2004, a decision that is now final. The proposal might have succeeded with a more effective rollout strategy, yet it failed to secure decisive backing from either the public or elected officials who supported bringing the Games to the City of Boston. Many had been watching closely to see whether Governor Charlie Baker—who has been performing admirably in leading our state, in our view—would endorse Boston as an Olympic host or declare his opposition to the Games. However, that question became moot once the USOC withdrew Boston’s bid. (Baker had been awaiting the findings of a $250,000 study to inform his position on whether Boston should pursue hosting the Olympics.)
