Councillor Joe Perlatonda’s reluctance to take a stand against the strip club’s potential return struck me as surprising, particularly given that he mentions it alongside his stated concerns regarding prostitution, addiction, and the challenges posed by the Methadone Clinic in our neighborhood. I have made myself a strong advocate against allowing such an establishment back into the district I serve and where I live, just as I would be anywhere throughout Chelsea. I question the basis for his position, especially considering I’m unaware of his attendance at Licensing Commission, Planning Board, Economic Development Board, or Zoning Board of Appeals meetings—and I’m certain he was absent from those involving Phantom Ventures. My own conviction comes directly from my participation in these meetings, where I’ve heard the passionate objections of my constituents and others across the city who have contacted me, including residents from his own district.
His approach seems limited to suggesting a new Police Commissioner and opposing the methadone clinic, yet he appears to lack understanding of the critical importance of contesting unwanted uses before they become established—as would have been the case with the “gentleman’s club.” I am as confident that he does not represent the views of those in his district as I am that the rest of us will persist in advocating for the improvements our community deserves.
