Chelsea will conduct its inaugural homeless count and survey at month’s end, driven by an expanding volunteer movement dedicated to combating homelessness throughout the city.
Approximately 30 volunteers assembled Monday evening to receive training and guidance from Melissa McWhinney, who works with the state Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). On Jan. 27, at a location and time to be announced, the group plans to canvass Chelsea’s streets and connect with homeless individuals.
This annual count is part of a nationwide initiative designed to help homeless people access permanent housing solutions. Project Opening Doors, working in partnership with the People’s AME Church and Rev. Sandra Whitley, is coordinating Chelsea’s effort.
The initiative has backing from City Manager Tom Ambrosino and several city councillors, including Damali Vidot.
