Michael Picarello
Career US Marine Corps veteran and Chelsea Soldiers Home retiree
Michael R. Picarella of Weymouth, formerly of Chelsea, died on July 21.
With more than 20 years of service as a career US Marine Corps veteran, Michael succumbed to a long illness at the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital. Born in Chelsea where he lived before joining the Marines, he settled in Weymouth upon returning from service and remained there until his death. Following his military service to the country, he worked at the Chelsea Soldiers Home and retired 10 years later. Throughout his career and subsequent retirement, he was an avid participant in cards and bowling, maintaining membership in the Knights of Columbus Council #83 and the Mottola Post in Revere.
Michael is survived as the devoted husband of the late Phyllis (Bryne); beloved brother of Grace Cerra of Chelsea, John Derdian of Utah and the late Julia Gaspar; loving uncle to George Cerra of Texas, Paul Cerra of Watertown, Allison Ryan of Nevada and Diane Kielsen of Utah; dear step-father of Susan Chambers and Diane Powers, both of Weymouth.
The Smith Funeral Home, Chelsea handled arrangements. A Funeral Mass took place in St. Michael the Archangel Chapel at the Chelsea Soldiers Home grounds. He was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Rather than flowers, the family requests that sympathies be expressed through donations to Carmelite Sisters of Boston, Boston Carmel, 61 Mt.
