On December 2, Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced that authorities had apprehended the individual sought in connection with the June 4 hit-and-run death of 25-year-old Marco Salguero-Cruz. The arrest followed an intensive investigation and assistance from the public.
Jose Daniel Arevalo, 34, of Everett, was arrested by Texas Rangers late on December 1 outside Houston, Texas in relation to Salguero-Cruz’s death. He is scheduled to be transported back to Massachusetts in the coming weeks.
The incident occurred on June 4 when Chelsea Police arrived at 284 Washington Ave. in response to a report of a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. Salguero-Cruz, a Chelsea resident, was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives from Chelsea Police and State Police working with Conley’s office conducted a thorough investigation. They obtained security camera footage from multiple locations that documented the silver Toyota Camry involved in the fatal collision before and after the incident.
Using resources from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Digital Evidence Lab, investigators extracted images showing the driver of the vehicle in question.
The images were distributed to media outlets on November 21, with a Spanish-language version released on November 22.
Following the release, someone who knew Arevalo recognized him from the photos shown on Univision. On the same day, detectives independently confirmed Arevalo’s identity through witness statements, social media investigation, and Registry of Motor Vehicle records.
Arevalo had reportedly left for El Salvador within two days of the crash, though he re-entered the United States the previous month.
He was found in Texas and taken into custody with assistance from local authorities.
Arrangements are being made to bring Arevalo back to Massachusetts.
