Approximately one month into the work, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced this week that the Runway 4R-22L Resurfacing and Approach Light Pier Replacement Safety Project is tracking well and will involve rehabilitating one of Logan Airport’s primary runways along with replacing a light pier integral to operations.
By June 23, the runway is anticipated to resume operations.
Maintaining Logan’s rigorous safety protocols requires this undertaking, according to Massport.
Beginning in mid-May, the runway reconstruction initiative closed Runway 4R-22L and will remain closed through June 23 while essential maintenance and repair work proceeds on one of Logan’s major runways. Most paving phases have been finished, leaving pavement markings, landscaping and lighting tasks to be completed.
Further work that does not necessitate the extended 4R-22L closure will proceed until November.
The coordinated work schedule and runway closure were established through consultation with airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration, and this approach improves safety while shortening the overall construction period and enabling faster restoration of normal operations. The project remains on track, and Massport anticipates that Runway 4R-22L will be ready for operations by the close of business on June 23.

These efforts represent routine yet critical safety maintenance conducted annually across airport facilities. The primary objective involves replacing deteriorated asphalt pavement. The pavements underwent their last rehabilitation during 2005, 2006 and 2008.
Both runway and runway-end work comprise this project, including replacement of the light pier. A concrete pier designed to last 75 years will replace the existing wooden structure; the current pier dates to original construction in 1955, with most recent repairs completed in 2016. The approach light pier replacement work is advancing as scheduled.
