Suffolk University Law School has established the Richard I. Clayman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
This fund creates a perpetual scholarship bearing Richard’s name to support law students pursuing their degrees, particularly those from Chelsea, where Richard—as he liked to call himself, “this kid from Chelsea”—devoted his entire career to public service. Richard would have deeply valued the mission of preparing attorneys to address the legal needs of Chelsea’s most vulnerable residents and others in similar communities, as this reflected the way he himself chose to live.
Throughout his life, Richard I. Clayman made service to others his calling. His professional journey took many forms: Park Counselor in his younger years, Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney, member of the Chelsea School Committee, Chelsea Board of Alderman, and attorney practicing in Chelsea. In each role, he extended himself to help lift others up. Growing up in Chelsea had taught him the value of mentorship and community support, and he repaid that debt by spending his life giving back to the place that shaped him.
Richard provided legal assistance to people facing hardship, never turning anyone away based on their finances. He served those struggling with addiction, mental illness, and everyday survival. His legal education at Suffolk University Law School equipped him with stronger capabilities to pursue his true mission: helping those in need, restoring hope to the discouraged, and advocating for those without resources to advocate for themselves.

The Richard I. Clayman Memorial Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to deserving Suffolk Law Students who share Richard’s commitment to serving and supporting residents of the greater Chelsea area. The fund’s founders are Kate Clayman, Joshua Huggard, Steven G. Clayman, Nancy Clayman, Amy L. Nechtem, John L. Dodge, Amanda Clayman, Thomas O. Levenberg, Alyse Clayman and Drew Bulfer.
