MBTA to Implement New Software System to Avert Chelsea Street Bridge

Chelsea commuters could face disruptions due to the frequent and unpredictable lifting of the Chelsea Street Bridge.

The bridge serves as a critical choke point along the SL-3 route, which connects Chelsea to East Boston and the Seaport. While the proposed 30-minute trip to South Station is promising, delays caused by the bridge being raised could undermine this goal.

The Chelsea Street Bridge is raised multiple times daily, with each operation taking over 20 minutes. These interruptions have the potential to significantly impact the efficiency of the Silver Line.

This issue was flagged as a potential challenge for SL-3 operations as early as last summer by the MBTA Board.

During a recent presentation to the Board, the MBTA introduced a new software system aimed at addressing the disruptions caused by the bridge being raised.

The software will be utilized by the Chelsea Street Bridge operator to inform the MBTA bus dispatch center whenever the bridge is scheduled to be raised.

The system will provide the dispatch center with estimates of the duration and expected travel times for two alternative detour routes around the bridge. This information will help dispatchers decide the most effective course of action for each bus.

According to MBTA officials, the Bus Operations Division is currently working on creating a Standard Operating Procedure to reroute SL-3 service when the bridge is raised. A potential alternative route has been identified and will be tested at different times of the day to assess performance and reliability.
