Shrek, a cantankerous ogre, finds his swamp invaded when a village of fairytale characters is forced to relocate there after being evicted from their homes.
To reclaim his beloved swamp, Shrek accepts a bargain with Lord Farquaad: rescue Princess Fiona in exchange for the deed. What begins as a mission to restore his solitude becomes an unexpected journey of love.
This tale comes to life across four performances this weekend at Chelsea High School (CHS), where the Performing Arts Department will stage ‘Shrek: The Musical’ on April 5 and 6 at 7 p.m., and April 7 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for students, teachers, and seniors; $10 for adults. Senior Austin Henry Vega, who portrays Shrek, stated: “It’s surreal. There’s a lot of laughter,” “It has everything for everyone.”
Abandoned as a child at age 7, Shrek had grown accustomed to solitude. Yet through his adventure, he discovers the importance of friendship, particularly bonding with Donkey. The character transforms from an isolated, bitter figure into a courageous hero.
Vega reflected on his final CHS production: “Shrek is a character I think a lot of people would relate to. He was alone all his life and never experienced love,” “He has a grim way of looking at the world. In the end, he learns that he is loved.”
Fiona, the princess at the heart of this romantic comedy, dreams of rescue by a charming prince and yearns for true love’s kiss to break her curse.
Reality, however, proves different from her expectations.
Junior Samantha Areli Iraheta, who takes on the role of Fiona, noted: “In the end you see a tale of them falling in love and creating a family, with Donkey included,” “My favorite part about this production is seeing us grow as characters and as a family. Everyone in the cast and crew created a child of a show that we put all our effort in. I am proud of every person who stands on this stage and is in the crew.”
The production features 26 cast members and 15 crew members, drawing talent from middle school students across Chelsea.
Sophomore Tammy Frias Caraballo, serving as sound manager, commented: “My favorite part about working on this show is getting to work with people you’ve created a bond with. There are constantly new people and perspectives,” “The music is so good. I wake up in the morning with songs already stuck in my head. I think people should come see it because you get taken to a world filled with magic. It’s a great show for friends and family.”
