The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is notifying the public that beginning Sunday, May 6, the on-ramp to the Tobin Bridge (Route 1 southbound) from Everett Avenue in Chelsea will close for roughly one month.
The closure is part of the larger Tobin Bridge Repair project and is necessary to enable contractors and crews to perform their work safely and efficiently.
Beyond the Everett Avenue on-ramp closure, the Tobin Bridge work will involve temporary off-peak lane closures on both directions of Route 1 through November 2018. Travel lane widths will be adjusted temporarily to provide crew access to bridge work zones. The Beacon Street off-ramp is also scheduled to close for approximately two months starting in summer 2018.
During peak commute hours this year, three full lanes will remain open on the Tobin Bridge. Motorists should be aware of additional upcoming impacts, including permanent lane closures on Route 1 northbound that will occur during the 2019 and 2020 construction seasons.
The $41.6 million initiative focuses on repairing a section of the Tobin Bridge deck, which connects Charlestown in Boston with Chelsea. The project is expected to wrap up by the end of 2020.
The work encompasses steel repairs on both upper and lower decks, concrete deck repairs on the lower deck, followed by waterproofing, resurfacing, and pavement marking installation. The scope also includes utility work, curb installation, paving, and construction of a new parking area beneath the bridge between Williams Street and Third Street.
