The School Department has named Monica Lamboy, a senior associate at the Collins Center at UMass Boston, to serve as the new executive director of Administration and Finance. She succeeds Gerry McCue, whose 26-year tenure in the role will end with his retirement this summer.
Lamboy, who lives in Charlestown, will assume her duties on July 1 in this key School Department position.
“In these changing times in our City and within our schools, Ms. Lamboy’s extensive background in financial and administrative management, organizational development, strategic and long range planning for both municipalities and for schools makes her uniquely qualified to step into the position of Executive Director of Administration and Finance,” noted Supt. Mary Bourque.
A graduate of Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Lamboy also earned a Masters in City and Regional Planning from the University of California. She has spent the past seven years as a Senior Associate with the University of Massachusetts Edward J. Collins Center for Public Management.
The Collins Center, which previously helped Chelsea select its City Manager several years ago, was instrumental in this recruitment process.
During her tenure at the Collins Center, Lamboy has directed teams working alongside municipal and school administrators and elected officials throughout Massachusetts on finance initiatives. These have encompassed financial forecasts, financial policies, and capital improvement plans. Her work on organizational studies and strategic planning has included economic development plans and trend reports examining shifts in population, business, housing, transportation, and infrastructure. For the Brookline public schools, she led a comprehensive team review covering the district’s central administration, instructional and educational programs, special education, information technology functions, and salary structures, with recommendations for enhanced efficiency and efficacy.
Before joining the Collins Center, Lamboy held positions with the City of Somerville, the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), and the City of Oakland across multiple departments. In Oakland, she worked as Special Assistant to the Superintendent for Business Services with the Oakland Unified School District.
