Bruins’ Blades coming to Chelsea
This summer, the Boston Bruins will return to libraries throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire as part of their “When You Read, You Score!” reading programs, which are presented by Velcro Companies. The Chelsea Public Library (569 Broadway) will host a visit on Tuesday, July 10th from 2 – 3 p.m. Additionally, on Wednesday, June 27, Bruins Development Camp prospects will team up with local students for games and reading activities at a kick-off event held at the Waltham Public Library (735 Main St., Waltham).
The Bruins partnership with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the Massachusetts Library System marks its ninth year in 2018, while this represents the third year of collaboration with the Children’s Librarians of New Hampshire to advance literacy initiatives and foster reading habits among young people in both states.
Throughout the summer months, members of the Bruins promo team and mascot Blades will travel to “When You Read, You Score!” libraries across Massachusetts and New Hampshire to advance youth literacy efforts. During each library visit, young visitors will have opportunities to meet Blades, participate in Bruins-themed arts and crafts activities, enjoy backyard games, and compete in hockey trivia for a chance to win official Bruins merchandise.
According to Fraser Cameron, CEO of Velcro Companies, “Literacy is one of the most important abilities for students to develop and builds a strong foundation for success in life; so we are proud to be working with the Bruins to bring educational and literacy programs to the kids,” “‘When You Read, You Score!’ is an innovative way to connect with kids and sharpen their reading skills by making learning engaging, exciting and fun outside the classroom.”
To encourage continued reading throughout the summer, Bruins players including Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand and Tuukka Rask collaborated with libraries to create a summer reading list featuring librarian recommendations for the best hockey books.
