Chelsea has become a focal point this week in the race for the Congressional seat currently held by Congressman Michael Capuano. Both he and his challenger Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councilor, are actively competing for support in the City.

The candidates have scheduled significant campaign activities for late in the week. Pressley is mobilizing grassroots support, while Capuano is bringing in popular Latino Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois to potentially offer his endorsement and campaign throughout Chelsea.

At the Mystic Brewery on Thursday, the Pressley campaign will host a rally and event.

According to Council President Damali Vidot, an early Pressley backer, elected councillors and School Committee members plan to attend and endorse Pressley’s candidacy.

Throughout her campaign trail efforts, Pressley has visited Chelsea multiple times and secured backing from various local officials.

Capuano has similarly cultivated local support.

The congressman has maintained a strong presence in Chelsea in recent weeks, including a campaign appearance at the Chelsea Village summer party earlier this month.

On Friday, Councillor Roy Avellaneda will endorse Capuano, and Congressman Gutierrez is expected to offer his endorsement as well at Avellaneda’s establishment, Pan Y Café.

Afterward, Congressman Capuano and Congressman Gutierrez will participate in an event at the Chelsea Collaborative focused on family reunification and Capuano’s recent visit to the Texas/Mexico border.

Congressional politics will dominate Chelsea’s agenda this week.
